Shining Our Light in the Darkness

In this season
of deep darkness and returning light,
of new birth and rebirth,
of the miraculous and the mundane,
of humility and gratitude;

In this era
of breaking open and disruption,
of dismantling foundational systems and structures,
of revealing what has been concealed and hidden,
of overabundance of political punditry and opinion;

These words of Hildegard of Bingen,
12-century German Christian mystic and visionary,
hold fast in my heart:

We cannot live in a world that is interpreted for us by others.
An interpreted world is not a hope.
Part of the terror is to take back our own listening.
To use our own voice.
To see our own light.

As we leave 2019 behind and enter a new decade,
may we hone our skills and capacities for
listening, observing, sensing, and feeling.

May we may recognize
what is important to focus on
for our present and future
and what to now leave behind.

May we step beyond others’ interpretations
of the world around us and
take back our own listening.

May we use our own voice
to give energy and attention to
a new world that is waiting for us –

A world where our guiding lights are
mutual respect, care, and compassion
for the whole, vision for
the wellbeing of all, and
intentional living in service of
a greater good.

May we see our own light and
call forth the light in others.

May we look for the light in every
situation and circumstance
and lift up that light.

And in the moments when
we can’t yet find the light
within what is happening,
may we shine our own light
until the hidden spark
within our circumstance can
catch fire.

May you, those dear to you,
and all of creation everywhere
be held in love and blessings
this holiday season and always.
